ENGL 3375: Sci-Fi & Fantasy Creative Writing Workshop
Description:
In the Science Fiction & Fantasy Workshop, you’ll first and foremost be writing sci-fi and fantasy stories. You'll learn a little about the history of these genres, reading in a wide variety of styles—from dragon-infested high fantasy to gritty science fiction that tackles deeper social issues. You’ll learn some of the tropes specific to “speculative fiction” as a way of better understanding why readers are so drawn to it.
By sharing your work with a tight-knit community of fellow writers in the class, you’ll learn how better to craft amazing worlds, build unforgettable and outrageous, never-before-seen characters, plumbing the depths of deep space and dark magic.
Along with learning how “high concept” ideas can be used as a framework for personal narratives, you’ll also come to understand some of the aspects of these genres that makes them so resilient and timeless. Finally, we’ll look into opportunities for publication of your work, completing a final revision that you can keep for yourself or send out into the sci-fi and fantasy-loving reader-verse.
